POSITION STATUS:    Full-Time, Exempt

The Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) seeks a full-time, exempt Director of Operations and Program Development.  The position is responsible for the management and supervision of the ABHES membership program-related initiatives and policies therein and ABHES Operations, including accounting, finance, and human resources.  Position requires acute leadership skills and innovative thought processes regarding the application of standards in conjunction with the program review process as well as administration within the Operations area.  The individual must have a high-level postsecondary curriculum and program development and assessment background.  Position also requires the supervision and oversight of the ABHES operations (Accounting, Human Relations, Budget, and Finance). 

Candidates must be professional; team-based but self-motivated; innovative but in keeping within the expressed accreditation model; and able to discern compliance requirements in conjunction with day-to-day duties.  The Director of Operations and Program Development position reports to the Executive Director. ABHES is a non-profit corporation incorporated in Virginia and located in Falls Church.  ABHES is a recognized accreditation association by the U.S. Department of Education.  Additional information may be viewed at www.abhes.org.

Background (Job Specific):

  • Ability to effectively supervise and manage staff with sound interpersonal skills.
  • Expertise in curriculum review and development in postsecondary education. 
  • Understanding of administrative and financial reporting systems.  Operating knowledge of Generally     Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and audit procedures.
  • Experience with personnel administration, benefits management, and human resource management.
  • Ability to function in a “hands-on” manner and lead, manage, perform, and function in a team environment; propose varied actions, plans, and alternatives, and evaluate and improve systems for ongoing effectiveness.
  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and work well under deadlines and pressures.
  • Member of ABHES leadership team, including necessary assistance to Executive Director.
  • Professional communications ability (written and verbal).

Major Responsibilities:

  • Management and oversight of program review process, including the review and approval of program-related application documents.
  • Supervision of program review and Operations staff.
  • Coordination of compliance-based model and application requirements.
  • Development of program review process and procedures.
  • Leadership with designated program-related advisory committees.
  • Monitor Accounting functions, including budget and finance.
  • Monitor personnel administration, benefits management, and human resources.
  • Ability to travel to coordinate on-site evaluations and other required travel.
  • Member of ABHES leadership team, including necessary assistance to Executive Director.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of office operations and procedures, in keeping with Commission objectives.
  • Other duties and responsibilities, as assigned, and in accordance with demonstrated abilities.


  • Master’s Degree (required); Curriculum development helpful, but not required/essential.
  • 5-8 years accreditation experience and/or other postsecondary education
  • Knowledge of postsecondary education curriculum and program development
  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook

Serve as a Committee Member

ABHES is lucky to have an array of individuals interested in serving as volunteer committee members. These individuals work tirelessly in promoting and securing ABHES’ place in health education accreditation.  Committee appointments are considered annually, typically in June, by the Commission Chair, and terms begin July 1.
