Subject: ABHES Call for Comment – Radiologic Technology Standards
Nearly three years ago, the Commission of the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES or the Commission) approved the creation and implementation of program-specific standards in those health education areas most in demand or for which there is an external issue, such as credentialing requirements, that compliments the requirement of such standards. The proposed standards are applicable to any ABHES-accredited institution offering a radiologic technology program, as is the case for previously-approved program-specific standards in dental assisting, diagnostic medical sonography, and pharmacy technology, included in Chapter VIII of the Accreditation Manual.
It is important to differentiate between Chapter VII, Programmatic Accreditation Standards, and Chapter VIII, Program-Specific Accreditation Standards. Chapter VII includes only those three programs ABHES is recognized to accredit programmatically (medical assisting, medical laboratory technology, surgical technology), overseen by the Programmatic Accreditation Committees as defined in the ABHES Bylaws. Chapter VIII includes standards for programs ABHES is not recognized to accredit programmatically, but required of ABHES-accredited institutions offering a program in the specific field (e.g., dental assisting.) These standards are developed and maintained by Program Advisory Committees.
Following over two years of consideration and review by specialists in the field, at its May 2012 meeting, the Commission adopted program-specific standards for Radiologic Technology. The Commission requests your consideration of these proposals and comment. As a reminder, these program-specific standards build upon Chapter V, Evaluation Standards Applicable to All Educational Programs, of the ABHES Accreditation Manual and, therefore, must be considered together.
