Former ABHES Chair- Connie Garland

It is with a heavy heart that I relay the passing of Connie Garland, former ABHES Chair, and friend, on October 26, 2010, at her home in Utah. While on the ABHES Commission she worked tirelessly and successfully enhancing the recognition of ABHES and she was famous for assisting other schools in need of guidance on accreditation matters. In 2005, ABHES presented Connie with the Recognition of Excellence award, for which she came personally to accept despite suffering a recent stroke. Her acceptance speech proved that nothing could slow Connie down and her smile endured.

Despite years of health issues, Connie was never without a smile!  Her positive attitude and strength carried her through many difficult times.

I recall clearly arriving at a Commission meeting one morning to be greeted by Connie who casually told me, and other commissioners nearby, that she felt ill the night before so went to the emergency room at a local hospital. She didn’t want to leave me without a Chair so she checked herself out, promising the doctor she would return when the meeting concluded that day. You can imagine our reaction and, of course, we got her right back to the hospital. This sort of exchange was classic Connie, putting everything and everyone first.

Connie trained and worked as a dental assistant and then taught in that field for many years. She earned her degree, managed AmeriTech College in Utah, formerly American Institute of Medical and Dental Technology, and continued to volunteer her time.  In 1997 the college was purchased and Connie retired.
