ABHES BULLETIN April 13, 2010 Remaining Accreditation Workshops in 2010  The following is a list of accreditation workshops being held for the remainder of the year.  As a reminder, for institutions and programs seeking a new (initial) grant of accreditation, and for institutions seeking a renewed grant of accreditation, the Commission mandates that a representative from each campus attend the accreditation workshop prior to submission of the Self-Evaluation Report (SER) and within one year of grant expiration for currently accredited institutions. MEMORANDUM April 6, 2010 Following a series of three calls for public comment and consideration of these comments, the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) has approved as final the Dental Assisting Program-Specific standards. To this end, the ABHES Commission sincerely appreciates the hard work of the Dental Assisting Advisory Committee and the Standards Review Committee. Commissioner Appointment Results   Congratulations to Terry Humphrey and John (Jack) Yena on their recent appointment to the ABHES Commission. Ms. Humphrey returns for her second, three-year term and Mr. Yena begins his first, three-year term. Both new terms begin July 1, 2010. Terry Humphrey has been a practicing surgical technologist since 1986. MEMORANDUM The Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) recently took a number of actions as described below. These actions are separated by final revisions to accreditation requirements (those affecting accreditation standards distributed for comment in January) and glossary definitions, and a request for comment on proposed revisions to accreditation standards. Comments on the proposals are due April 15, 2010.  Final revisions to accreditation standards and Glossary of Definitions (Attachments 1-4) apply to the Accreditation Manual, 16th Edition, and are effective July 1, 2010. MEMORANDUM March 8, 2010 As you are aware, on January 1, 2010, The California Private Postsecondary Act of 2009 (Act) took effect implementing new state regulations for private postsecondary institutions in California. The new Act contains provisions for approval by accreditation and with that approval the ability for institutions to make substantive changes as outlined in California Education Code section 94896.
